Spotlight on the Martin Luther King, Sr. Community Collaborative
Empowering Communities Through Collaborative Efforts
At the heart of Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward and Sweet Auburn Avenue communities is the Martin Luther King, Sr. Community Resources Collaborative (MLK Sr Collaborative)—a true pillar of support and empowerment for families. Our incredible alliance, which includes partners like the Casey Family Program and Ebenezer Baptist Church, provides essential resources that uplift and strengthen the community.
Partnering for Educational Excellence: The Sankofa Chronicles
In a testament to our innovative spirit, the MLK Sr Collaborative applied for and was awarded the $4M grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Education Innovation and Research Program in January 2024. This prestigious grant supports our groundbreaking project, “Sankofa Chronicles: Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum from American Diasporas.”
Inspired by the rich African philosophy of Sankofa—learning from the past to inform our future—the Sankofa Chronicles is more than just a curriculum. It’s a multimedia journey that brings to life the stories, culture, and heritage of nine different American diasporas. Designed for students in the Atlanta Metropolitan area and New York City Public Schools, this program aims to enrich historically underserved students’ social and emotional development, including those of color, English language learners, and students facing economic challenges or trauma.
In collaboration with Morehouse College, esteemed students and alumna of Spelman College, who serve as lead scholar advisors, and the Emmy-award-winning CWK Network, the MLK Sr Collaborative is creating a culturally responsive and deeply impactful curriculum. The project is expected to enhance social-emotional competence among students and teachers and create a more positive and engaging school environment.
As this inspiring project grows, the MLK Sr Collaborative will remain the trusted keeper of these crucial narratives, ensuring they are preserved and shared for future generations.
A Beacon of Hope and Opportunity
The MLK Sr Collaborative stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, offering an integrated array of services to enhance the quality of life for residents in one of Atlanta’s most historic neighborhoods. By addressing critical needs such as affordable housing, financial literacy, and employment readiness, the Collaborative plays a vital role in breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering economic independence.
One of the MLK Sr Collaborative’s cornerstone initiatives is its focus on economic empowerment. Through working with other non-profit organizations, the Collaborative provides community members with access to financial education, credit counseling, and small business support. These services equip individuals and families with the knowledge and tools to achieve economic stability and success.
Strengthening Families and Communities
With a warm and welcoming approach, we bring together faith-based institutions, nonprofits, economic groups, and government agencies to ensure every family can access the tools and support they need to thrive. Our work is guided by a deep commitment to promoting self-reliance, fostering cooperative decision-making, and ensuring everyone in the community can reach their full potential.
The Collaborative’s mission is all about empowerment—helping families overcome everyday challenges while building a foundation for lifelong success. Through its thoughtful programs and partnerships, the Collaborative is making a real difference in the lives of those it serves, always focusing on justice, education, and the betterment of the community.
Health and Wellness Initiatives
Beyond education and economic empowerment, the MLK Sr Collaborative is also deeply invested in the community’s health and wellness. By partnering with local healthcare providers and organizations, the Collaborative offers a range of health-related services, including screenings, wellness workshops, and mental health support. These initiatives are designed to promote a holistic approach to community well-being, ensuring that residents have access to the care they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
A Vision for the Future
As we look to the future, the MLK Sr Collaborative remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering the communities it serves. Through continued collaboration with partners and the development of innovative programs, the Collaborative is poised to make an even more significant impact in the years to come. Our vision is to create a community where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and where Martin Luther King, Sr.’s legacy continues to inspire generations.
